UK Court Rules Toddler’s Parents Can’t Take Their Child to Italy for Palliative Care

By Melanie Arter | April 20, 2018

The UK Supreme Court ruled that the parents of a terminally ill toddler cannot remove the baby from the hospital to let doctors in Italy treat the baby.

Alfie’s parents, Tom Evans and Kate James, argued that their son, 23-month-old Alfie Evans, was being unlawfully detained at the hospital. They hoped to take him to a hospital in Rome where he can receive palliative care.

The court said doctors at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool can take Alfie, who has a degenerative brain disease, off of life support.

My Take - While I have no medical authority to make any judgments I do believe we all have a moral authority to know tyranny when we see it.  If what the doctors are saying is true - and I'm inclined to think it is - their decision is totally rational and reasonable.  But there's one thing wrong with this - in no way should it be their decision.  While this seems rational we should be asking: When does the idea the state determines whether someone receives medical care versus what people want?

That's the problem with socialized medicine.  If the state is going to pay for it then they have the right to decide what will be paid for and for how long. That's one part of the issue,  but when the state tells parents they cannot take their child out of their jurisdiction to get care elsewhere - care they're willing to pay for themselves - that's tyranny.

No less tyrannous and morally degrading than what the Nazi's did or the Communists have been doing for decades.  Those who claim this is an improper comparison have to understand all tyranny starts slow, but this kind of tyranny has an invertible moral decline that's consistent to what leftism is, and has been since the French Revolution where the state is god and the people are an obedient subservient mass.
