While other freshmen were busy setting up their dorm
rooms and exploring campus with their parents, the 19-year-old (and
pseudonymous) Lingling was stuck at home the first week of September, fighting
with her father about college tuition. After having been admitted to college in
her home city Chengdu, Lingling hopes to become the first in her family to go
to college and live a different life. But Lingling has a problem: her father
refuses to finance her dream.
Money is not actually Lingling’s problem. She comes from
a family of good standing that runs its own business in Chengdu. Her father’s
objection mainly because he believes that college education is useless. “Investing in college education is doomed to fail,”
Lingling’s father told a local newspaper. “Today,
even peddlers who collect garbage…make more money than many graduates.” See more at:
