Steve Milloy: Climate Change

Let's deal with Herr Müller first.

I will grant he does like to at least pretend to play both sides of the fence, which can be truly disconcerting and yes, his claimed global warming skepticism was mostly a flag of convenience but he did speak fairly and honestly about the hockey stick fraud and hide the decline, for which he deserves due credit:

You may also wish to review The debunking of global warming continues. RK

Almost all the coverage of the Muller and BEST results confounds three different points, is poorly researched and mixes up cause and effect. Richard Muller is shamelessly promoting himself as something he is not, and his conclusions are nonsense on stilts that defy rational explanation.

‘Non-partisan’ group abandons pretence of neutrality

Richard Muller and the good folks over at the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature (BEST) project have released their temperature analysis back to 1750, and are making their usual unsupportable claims.

From Minnesotans for Global Warming, just because

California’s electricity sector is more vulnerable to climate change than previously thought, as higher temperatures will impede the state’s ability to generate and transmit power while demand for air conditioning rises, a report said Tuesday.

Uh, wait, no that’s “nuisance fish will escape better” (odd, we know of lots of cases where gambusia are deliberately distributed to eat mosquito larvae rather than using chemical larvacides so presumably they are good when they are green – but not when they are warm enough to get away from Australian bass, apparently).

The size of rainstorms hitting Los Angeles has been getting bigger over the past 60 years, according to a new report released today by the Environment California Research and Policy Center.  That much could certainly be true. Cities do heavily influence local weather through a variety of effects – paving absorbing more insolation, trombe wall effect, wind spoiling and so on. This tends to create additional lofting and accentuate local storm activity (may even create local thunderstorms). IIRC studies in Tokyo began highlighting this back in the 1980s.

Looks like Mikey has been tallying up what Jim’s been raking in in “environmental prizes” and wants a piece of the action. Wonder if he’ll start getting himself arrested outside 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue?

Linda McQuaig can’t understand why people don’t equate Summer with [fill in favorite disaster du jour] (it’s the same every year!)

Look out! Plants may grow better – we could have more trees! Oh, wait…

This is what scientists are supposed to do, find inconsistencies, point them out, and put them right. And so I gave this a little thought.

One of the projected negative consequences of global warming is a concomitant increase in climatic variability, including more frequent hot weather events.

Prof Matt Strassler who blogs at ProfMattStrassler.com made an excursion into our favorite topic which is an inferior scientific discipline at the same moment, namely to the climate change science:Humans, Carbon Dioxide and Climate

Claims of human produced CO2 causing climate change are based on output of computer models of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Programmed to produce predetermined results their output is used for global and national policies on energy even though projections have been consistently wrong.

We’ve got to keep the planet from warming 2°C since industrialization began, the AGW alarmist scientists warn us. So far we are told that manmade greenhouse gases have warmed the planet 0.8°C since about 1880, which means it must not warm more than another 1.2°C.

Tim “I’m-only-luke-warm-worst-of-all-I-want-a-carbon-tax”:
The Coalition’s green policies are “incoherent and failing to achieve objectives”, says the manufacturers’ trade body, because the bureaucracy involved in complying with the regulations was time-consuming, inefficient and costly. No wonder really, as it’s the result of a bigger problem: the Man in Whitehall is trying to beat climate change by planning the economy.

Let me say at the outset that geoengineering to control Earth’s climate is not the wisest path which Homo sapiens (“Wise Man”) could travel down. Because of the large scales involved, future geoengineering may turn out to be the dumbest thing our dumb (albeit clever) species has ever done.

The Vermont Independent rebutted what he called “myths” espoused by the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee’s ranking member.

I blame global warming:
”THERE has never been a better time to be a farmer.” This bold assertion came from National Farmers’ Federation president Jock Laurie on the first day of this year, when he said 2012 was shaping as ”one of the most positive years on record”.
